TAUT STRIP MODELS

Taut Strip ModelAn alternative to the testing of a full bridge aeroelastic model is the use of a taut strip model.  The model is comprised of cladding segments representing the scaled geometry and mass of the full scale bridge. These cladding segments are then fixed to tensioned wires or tubes that provide the vertical, lateral and torsional stiffness of the model. The modes of vibration are sinusoidal, much the same as the prototype bridge. This technique provides information on the responses of the bridge deck in the individual modes of vibration.  The data from the wind tunnel tests can then be used in further analyses to predict the complete bridge behaviour.
